Study Overview

Eurofins Alba are inviting you to participate in a research study for people who have Atopic Dermatitis (Eczema).

The purpose of the procedure is to provide fresh tissue samples for an external research study. Three x 4mm biopsy samples will be collected from up to six participants diagnosed with active Atopic Dermatitis. All biopsies will be taken from active skin lesions.

You will not be able to choose the area from which the biopsies will be taken, as this will be decided by the Study Doctor. Digital images of the tissue sampling site (pre-biopsy) will be obtained.

The biological samples obtained will be used in an external research study on Atopic Dermatitis. Up to 10 volunteers may be recruited to allow for failure to meet the inclusion criteria and withdrawals from the procedure. The aim is for a minimum of five people to complete the sample collection procedures.

You need to have active Atopic Dermatitis (Eczema) with lesions suitable for biopsy sampling (as judged by the Doctor) and no history of diabetes. It is entirely up to you whether want to take part in this procedure. If you do agree to participate, you will be asked to sign Consent Forms (both a general consent and a separate Biopsy Consent) confirming your agreement to take part before the procedure.

In addition, you will be asked to complete a questionnaire about your health and medication. Depending on your answers to these questions, it is possible that we may be unable to accept you for the procedure. If you are assessed as eligible at this point, you will have a consultation with the test centre Doctor (who is female) at which a chaperone will also be present in order to determine your diagnosis of active Atopic Dermatitis and the absence of other skin conditions.

Photographs will be taken of the proposed biopsy sites to support the Doctor’s diagnosis. You will not be identifiable from these images. If you are not willing to have these photographs taken, you cannot participate. If you are assessed as eligible, the biological sampling procedures will be completed on the same day; you will only be required to attend the test centre on one occasion, unless you are asked to return for a second visit for suture removal (where required).

The visit will take approximately 2 hours and 30 minutes.
